Embark on a mesmerizing journey through Tracy Arm Fjord, a testament to nature’s artistry. As we navigate this pristine fjord, the rugged beauty unfolds before us—steep cliffs and glacier-covered mountains guarding the largest intact coastal temperate rainforest in the United States. The entrance showcases ancient old-growth trees, witnesses to the retreat of the Ice Age.
Venturing further into the 30-mile waterway, the lingering icy embrace becomes palpable. The Twin Sawyer Glaciers majestically flow, shedding colossal chunks of water frozen for decades. Tracy Arm’s wilderness, sheltered by the Tongass National Forest, surpasses nearby Glacier Bay in splendor.
In this haven, encounters with wildlife are commonplace—bears, whales, mountain goats, and chubby baby seals resting on ice floes grace the untouched corners of this wilderness. Summer temperatures demand warm clothing, and waterproof gear is essential in a region where rainfall exceeds a meter and a half annually. As we cruise through this untarnished environment, eco-friendly practices come to life, with a ban on disposable products on scenic cruising days. Tracy Arm, a pristine marvel, invites us to witness nature’s pristine allure in every wave and glacier.
Optional Extra: Tracy Arm Fjord & Glacier Explorer – $350 AUD
Embark on an exclusive adventure to explore the very best of the Tracy Arm Wilderness Area. Board a luxurious high-speed catamaran directly from your cruise ship, immersing yourself in the warm, spacious cabin surrounded by large windows. Your experienced captain guides you past curious seals on floating icebergs.
Cruise Tracy Arm beneath towering cliffs, feeling the mist from cascading waterfalls. Frequent stops offer glimpses of wildlife—pigeon guillemots, bald eagles, harbor seals, mountain goats, and bears. The vessel’s extraordinary maneuverability brings you as close as possible to the ever-changing face of Sawyer Glacier. Topside, enjoy complimentary food samples served by the friendly Alaskan crew as you trace the rugged shores of Stephens Passage on the cruise back to Juneau.
Afternoon Exploration: Discovering Juneau’s Rich Heritage and Wilderness
Juneau, Alaska’s capital, welcomes us with its rich history and breathtaking natural wonders. Accessible only by air and sea, this world-class travel destination sits amidst rugged mountain terrain. Originally settled by the Auke tribe, the area has been a gathering place for thousands of years, continuing the tradition with descendants gathering food and resources from land and sea.
Founded in 1880 as Harrisburg, later renamed to honor prospector Joe Juneau, this city teems with outdoor adventures. Explore on foot along the Perseverance Trail, marvel at Mendenhall Glacier, embark on a whale-watching boat, or soar above the Juneau Icefield in a helicopter.
As we traverse Juneau, the spirit of its pioneers and the enduring legacy of the Tlingit people come alive. The city’s unique blend of history and outdoor exploration ensures a captivating afternoon for our women’s group, offering a glimpse into Alaska’s capital and its extraordinary surroundings.
Notes:
Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair. In the event unpredictable and ever-changing ice conditions preclude your cruise ship from entering Tracy Arm Fjord, the tour will be modified to explore Endicott Arm — a fjord and tidewater glacier of equal beauty. Dress warmly in layers to fully enjoy the outside observation deck. Wear a hat or beanie; bring gloves and a scarf. The vessel is equipped with deluxe seating, a galley and restrooms. Disembark right next to your cruise ship in downtown Juneau. Wildlife sightings are likely but are not guaranteed. Bring passport on tour.
