DAY 3- Saturday 24th Aug 2024 – Golden Circle tour (B,L)

Golden Circle Odyssey: Exploring Iceland’s Treasures

Today, your journey continues under the guidance of your private driver-guide, as you embark on a captivating exploration of the renowned Golden Circle route. This adventure will unveil some of Iceland’s most iconic and breathtaking attractions.

Begin your day by venturing into the picturesque countryside, leading you to Thingvellir – a historical and geological wonder. This site is home to the original Althing, the world’s oldest democratic parliament, and is renowned for its stunning lava formations. The remarkable feature of witnessing tectonic plates drifting apart is unique to this area. Today, Thingvellir stands as a remarkable national park, a jewel in the crown of Iceland’s historical heritage. It’s a treasure cherished by the Icelandic nation, holding a profound place in the nation’s identity.

During your Golden Circle journey, you’ll indulge in an exceptional lunch experience that’s unlike any other. Embark on a unique culinary adventure at Friðheimar. Begin with an insightful greenhouse tour, discovering the secrets of sustainable tomato cultivation powered by geothermal energy. Following the tour, indulge in a delicious lunch at the on-site restaurant, where every dish features the farm’s freshly harvested tomatoes. From savory soups to flavorful sauces and sweet desserts, experience the best of farm-to-table dining surrounded by the vibrant greenhouse ambiance. Friðheimar promises a short but unforgettable journey into the heart of Icelandic sustainable agriculture and exquisite cuisine.

Following this unforgettable lunch, you’ll proceed to Haukadalur valley to witness the famous Geysir, which gave its name to all erupting hot springs. While the original Geysir has been less active lately, its neighbor Strokkur is a reliable performer, shooting water up to 90 feet high approximately every five minutes. Around 30 smaller geysers and hot pools dot the area, creating a hub of geothermal activity that’s both thrilling and captivating.

The journey then takes you to witness one of Europe’s most impressive waterfalls, Gullfoss (Golden Waterfall). This majestic cascade hurls thousands of tons of icy water into a deep gorge from the glacier Langjökull. The sheer scale and the thunderous roar of Gullfoss must be experienced firsthand to be fully appreciated. You’ll have the unique privilege of approaching the very brink of the waterfall, feeling the glacial water spray upon you as you witness its awe-inspiring power.

As the day comes to an end, you’ll return to Reykjavik, having absorbed the wonders of the Golden Circle. Enjoy a satisfying dinner experience (to be paid locally) and retreat to the comfort of Hotel Sand for a peaceful overnight stay. Reflect on the day’s extraordinary discoveries and anticipate the continued adventures that await you on your Icelandic journey.

DAY 7- Wednesday 28th Aug 2024 – Sermermiut (B,L)

Sermermiut Exploration: Unveiling History and Natural Wonders

Immerse yourself in the rich tapestry of the past as we embark on an enlightening journey through Sermermiut, an ancient settlement steeped in 4000 years of history and diverse Inuit cultures. This exceptional tour offers a deep dive into the traditions and stories that have shaped this remarkable place.

Our adventure commences at the venerable old cemetery, where echoes of history still linger through the resting souls of today. Following the trail, we traverse towards Sermermiut and Nakkaavik – known as “the place to fall,” or Old Ladies Gorge. But the journey doesn’t end there. Instead, we continue our path to Seqinniarfik, aptly named “Where we welcome the sun” or Holms Hill. It’s here that the people of Ilulissat gather every 13th of January, celebrating the return of the sun after the extended winter darkness.

Guided by a knowledgeable expert, this expedition unveils hidden historical sites, including the elusive old Inuit graves that lie slightly off the beaten path. These graves, marked by visible signs and skeletal remains, offer a glimpse into a bygone era. The stunning backdrop of icebergs sets the stage for Sermermiut’s ancient settlement, just one and a half kilometers south of Ilulissat. Throughout the ages, various Inuit cultures have called this place home, and their legacies are still palpable in the remnants that dot the landscape. A visit to Sermermiut is an essential part of your Ilulissat experience, where the guide’s narratives bring to life the tales of Inuit life and customs before the European presence. Touch the permafrost with your own hands and explore the ruins of turf huts, all while gaining insight into the enduring connection between humanity and this pristine environment.

Continuing our expedition, we make our way to the Ilulissat Icefjord Center, a marvel of architectural ingenuity that seamlessly harmonizes with its surroundings. Inspired by the snowy owl’s majestic wingspan in flight, the Icefjord Centre stands as both an attraction and a testament to its purpose. Its design thoughtfully integrates into the UNESCO World Heritage Site, offering panoramic views of the landscape from its rooftop walkway. Dorte Mandrup Architects’ vision ensures minimal impact on the environment while fostering a transparent dialogue between the exhibition and the natural world.

After a day filled with exploration, the evening invites you to savor a delightful dinner experience (to be paid locally) and a comfortable overnight stay at the esteemed Hotel Icefiord.

With appetites satisfied, you’ll have the freedom to explore the area at your own pace. Whether it’s hiking amidst breathtaking landscapes or indulging in tranquil moments with a cup of coffee, the choice is yours to make. As the day winds down, our boat will carry us back to Ilulissat, allowing you to savor the memories of the day.

Village life in Oqaatsut revolves around nurturing a small, sea-loving community. The scatter of houses across rocky terrain is always in close proximity to the harbor. In this carless village, fishing boats reign supreme, prized possessions that come to life each summer morning. The fishermen are fueled by the perpetual sun of the Arctic night and the promise of a fruitful catch of halibut and sharks.

Even in winter, Oqaatsut thrives, swapping boats for eager sled dogs and replacing the sunlight with the warm glow of candlelight. Gatherings around dinner tables with cherished friends light up the polar darkness. The people of Oqaatsut embrace village life not only because it’s ingrained in their Inuit heritage but because it’s a deliberate choice. Oqaatsut isn’t just a settlement; it’s home.

As the day draws to a close, relish in a delectable dinner experience (to be paid locally) and retire for the night at the comfortable Hotel Icefiord.
