Day 2 – Yerevan City Tour, Ararat Brandy Factory & Carpet Weaving Experience (B/D)

Today we are introduced to Yerevan, one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited cities, often referred to as the “Pink City” for its distinctive rose-coloured tuff stone architecture.

Our guided city tour takes us through the heart of Yerevan, visiting Republic Square, the Opera House, Swan Lake, and the lively Northern Avenue, each offering insight into the city’s character and daily life. We then visit the impressive Cascade Complex, where outdoor art installations line the monumental stairway. Those who wish can climb to the top, while escalators inside provide an easier option, both rewarding us with panoramic views over the city and, on clear days, Mount Ararat.

In the afternoon, we visit the famous Ararat Brandy Factory, where we learn about Armenia’s iconic brandy production and enjoy a guided tasting.

Later, we take part in a carpet weaving master class, experiencing one of Armenia’s oldest traditional crafts and learning about the symbolism and techniques behind these intricate designs.

Day 3 – Garni Temple, Symphony of Stones & Geghard Monastery (B/L/-)

After breakfast, we depart Yerevan to explore some of Armenia’s most significant cultural and natural landmarks.

Our first stop is Garni Temple, the only surviving pagan temple in Armenia, dating back to the 1st century. Set above a dramatic river gorge, the site offers insight into Armenia’s pre-Christian history. Nearby, we explore the remains of the ancient fortress and Roman bathhouse, featuring a remarkably preserved mosaic floor. We also observe a traditional lavash baking demonstration, witnessing the preparation of Armenia’s iconic flatbread.

We then continue to the Symphony of Stones in the Azat Gorge, where we enjoy a gentle hike through towering basalt columns formed by volcanic activity, creating one of Armenia’s most striking natural landscapes.

Our journey continues to the UNESCO-listed Geghard Monastery, a remarkable medieval complex partially carved into solid rock. Here, we experience the monastery’s unique acoustics during a live performance by a women’s choir, creating a deeply atmospheric and memorable moment.

On our return to Yerevan, we take part in an eco-bag painting master class, designing our own reusable bag inspired by traditional Armenian patterns.

Day 4 – Khor Virap, Noravank, Areni Cave & Armenian Doll-Making to Goris (B/L/-)

After breakfast, we depart Yerevan and travel south toward the Armenian Highlands, beginning with a visit to Khor Virap Monastery, the closest point in Armenia to Mount Ararat. The monastery’s name means “deep pit,” referencing its role in Armenia’s early Christian history, where Saint Gregory the Illuminator was imprisoned for spreading Christianity. Today, the site is best known for its breathtaking views of Mount Ararat, weather permitting. We enjoy a relaxed coffee or tea break here, accompanied by traditional Armenian dried fruits.

We continue to the striking Noravank Monastery, an architectural masterpiece set dramatically among towering red rock cliffs. The two-storey church is particularly unique, and the surrounding canyon creates a stunning natural backdrop for this important religious site.

Our journey then takes us to the Areni Cave, home to the world’s oldest known winery, dating back over 6,000 years. In the nearby village of Areni, we enjoy a tasting of local wines made from the region’s distinctive Areni grape variety.

Later, we visit a local art studio for a traditional Armenian doll-making master class, learning about the symbolism behind these handcrafted figures and creating one of our own.

In the late afternoon, we continue on to Goris, a charming town known for its rocky landscapes, ancient cave dwellings, and unique stone formations. The evening is at leisure.

Day 5 – Khndzoresk Cave Village, Tatev Ropeway, Devil’s Bridge Hike & Goris (B/-/D)

After breakfast, we set out to explore one of southern Armenia’s most fascinating and dramatic regions.

Our day begins with a visit to the ancient Khndzoresk Cave Village, a remarkable settlement carved into the cliffs and inhabited until the mid-20th century. We explore the network of cave dwellings that once served as homes, storage areas, and stables, while enjoying sweeping views of the surrounding gorge and rugged landscape.

We then travel to the Wings of Tatev aerial tramway, the world’s longest reversible cable car. The ride offers spectacular panoramic views as we glide across the deep Vorotan Gorge, arriving at the breathtaking Tatev Monastery. Perched dramatically on the edge of a cliff, this 9th-century monastery was once a major spiritual and educational centre of medieval Armenia.

After exploring the monastery, we enjoy a scenic hike down to Devil’s Bridge, a natural rock formation created by mineral-rich waters over centuries. Along the trail, we take in striking views of the canyon, river, and surrounding cliffs. At Devil’s Bridge, turquoise mineral pools and warm springs create a truly unique natural setting.

This evening, we return to Goris and enjoy dinner featuring a Zhingyalov Hats master class, where we learn to prepare this traditional flatbread filled with fresh herbs — a wonderful way to experience local cuisine and culture.

We then continue to the Old Bridge Winery in the Vayots Dzor region for a guided visit and wine tasting, sampling some of Armenia’s finest wines while learning about local winemaking traditions.

In the afternoon, we journey north to Lake Sevan, known as the “Blue Pearl of Armenia” and one of the largest high-altitude freshwater lakes in the world. We visit Sevanavank Monastery, perched on a peninsula overlooking the lake, where panoramic views stretch across the sparkling blue waters and surrounding mountains.

Our journey continues through scenic forested landscapes to Dilijan, a charming mountain town renowned for its fresh air, mineral springs, and lush surroundings.

Once the capital of the Kakheti Kingdom between the 15th and early 17th centuries, Gremi was an important political, economic, and cultural centre along the Great Silk Road. Today, the site offers insight into Georgia’s medieval past through its preserved towers, churches, and archaeological remains.
Please note that if this visit falls on a Monday, the museum interiors are closed, however the fortress can still be explored from the outside.

We then continue to Togonidze Wine Cellar in the village of Shalauri for a tasting of traditional Georgian wines produced using the ancient qvevri method.
