Experience Arctic Norway in Luxury
Experience Norway at its most magical on this beautifully curated winter journey through the heart of the Arctic. Travelling in February offers crisp snow-covered landscapes, fewer crowds, and some of the best opportunities to witness the Northern Lights dancing across the sky. From elegant city stays to remote Arctic villages, this journey blends comfort, culture, and unforgettable natural beauty.
We begin in Oslo and Bergen before venturing deep into the fjords and north to the dramatic Lofoten Islands, where jagged peaks rise straight from the sea and traditional fishing villages feel frozen in time. Enjoy immersive winter experiences including snowshoeing, scenic coastal cruising, and time to soak up life above the Arctic Circle. A highlight of the journey is our overnight voyage aboard a modern Havila ship along the historic Norwegian Coastal Route, following the same path as the original coastal post ships of a century ago.
As we travel further north to Tromsø, the North Cape and Finnmark, the Arctic landscape becomes ever more remote and awe-inspiring. With carefully selected accommodation, included meals, expert local guides, and the camaraderie of a small group of like-minded women, this is a rare opportunity to experience Norway’s Arctic winter in true luxury — slow, immersive, and deeply rewarding.

Welcome to Oslo, the capital of Norway. On arrival, we are met and transferred together by private group transfer into the city centre.
After checking in to our centrally located hotel, there is time to settle in and relax before the evening’s welcome experience. Oslo is compact, elegant and easy to explore, offering a wonderful introduction to Norwegian culture and lifestyle.
This evening, we enjoy a welcome drink and dinner at the hotel. During the welcome drink, we are treated to a special surprise performance — The Norway Show. This entertaining 20-minute performance by a local artist offers a light-hearted and engaging introduction to Norwegian history and culture. Presented as a comic lecture inspired by true stories (with a little creative licence), it is an enjoyable and memorable way to begin our journey.
Meals: Dinner
Accommodation: Grand Hotel Oslo by Scandic
Oslo is a small, well-organised capital — but what happens when there is plenty of snow? Today, we find out.
This morning, we are picked up directly from our hotel by a small bus and joined by our most experienced local guide for an in-depth exploration of Oslo. We begin with a guided walk through Gammel Oslo, the historic part of the city, before continuing to Frogner Park, also known as Vigelandsparken. Here we explore the remarkable collection of sculptures by Gustav Vigeland, one of Norway’s most celebrated artists. The total guided experience lasts approximately 2.5 hours.
The afternoon is free to explore Oslo at your own pace. You may choose to visit the impressive new Munch Museum, or take a short ferry ride to Bygdøy to explore the Fram Museum, dedicated to Norway’s polar exploration history. Other options include wandering through Frogner, home to Oslo’s elegant residential streets; Grønland, the city’s multicultural heart filled with global flavours and aromas; or Grunerløkka, Oslo’s trendy and creative district. A stroll along the Akerselva River is another lovely way to experience the city.
This evening, we dine at a restaurant within walking distance of the hotel, enjoying modern Norwegian cuisine inspired by international flavours and created using first-class local produce.

Today we will travel to Bergen by train and boat. After a short walk to the station we start today’s journey, known as one of the most beautiful railways in the world, the Bergensbanen, which takes you over and through the mountains to the fjords. Lean back and enjoy the landscape.
After crossing the mountains we will skip to the Flåmsbanen train a steep mountain train taking you from high up in the mountains down to the fjord at sea level. From here we continue on an electric sightseeing vessel to enjoy in silence the UNESCO-heritage listed Nærøyfjord.
After arriving in Gudvangen we get on the bus to continue the journey to Voss, from where we enjoy the last part of the trip by train. Upon arrival in the evening. We walk in the direction of our hotel. We enjoy a Bergen traditional street food snack at Trekroneren before checking in at our boutique hotel Charmante Skostredet hotel. Our luggage is taken care of from Oslo to Bergen.
Overnight: Charmante Skostredet hotel.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
We start the day with a 2-hour guided walk from the hotel. We visit the UNESCO heritage-listed Bergen Brygge, the old village with wooden trading houses. And continue to the Bergen fort. After this walk, we pass by the Juhls Silver gallery. In this gallery, they sell the jewellery they make in their studio in Kautokeino in the North, which we will visit later on this tour. An amazing place with a great story behind it.
We take the Fløibanen funicular up the mountain for a great overview over the city and the fjord, and (if the weather permits) we can walk down into the city with a great view all the way. After we enjoy lunch in the Frescohallen, a historic place in the middle of Bergen.
Tonight’s dinner will be at the Michelin star restaurant Lysverket. Redefining Nordic cuisine is what The New York Times wrote about this restaurant. Neo Fjordic cuisine is what they call their food.
With a strong emphasis on local seafood, and sustainably grown ingredients. We will enjoy a 10 course Tasting menu.
Overnight: Charmante Skostredet
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
From Bergen airport via a short stop in Oslo, we arrive at Evenes/Harstad airport. From the airport, a private shuttle takes us to the Lofoten islands. A very scenic drive with the white jagged peaks rising up from the sea, a view locally known as “the Lofoten wall”. We drive to Svolvaer with a detour visiting a Salmon farm in Blokken, specially equipped for visitors, it gives a good insight in the second biggest export business of Norway, Norwegian Salmon.
Upon arrival in Svolvær, check in Svinøya Rorbuer. Being in the Lofoten, this is the local way to stay, Rorbu is the historic fishermen’s houses. Remember that in the past 1000 years this place has been responsible for the main export product (dried cod fish) of Norway until the oil was discovered only 5 decades ago. Every spring, many thousands of fishermen from all along the Norwegian coast (some 1000 miles away) came here to fish in the early spring. It is big still today. We will be witnessing this fishing bonanza. We are now above the Arctic Circle and chances to see the Northern lights are there all the time, look up when it is dark and if the sky is free, the magic might have started. Dinner at the hotel’s restaurant Børsen.Spiseri. Stay in Svinøya Rorbuer.
Overnight: Svinøya Rorbuer
Meals: Breakfast, Dinner
In the morning we can relax, take a stroll along the fishracks on Svinøya or shop in town. For those who want there is an optional Trollfjord and Eagle boat tour to book.. A 3 hrs tour where we sail through the fjords to the very scenic and narrow Trollfjord with its dramatic history (fisherman’s war).
Upon return, we take a 30-minute private shuttle to Henningsvær, the heart of the fishery in the Lofoten. And a very scenic little town. We start with lunch before we discover the Cod bonanza going on at this time of year. Henningsvær has a lot of fun small shops, cafes etc. Every day and all over the Lofoten we will see the codfish being brought to land and hanged on the sticks (stockfish) to dry in the dry winter air. We plan to arrange a visit to a fisherman/cleaning operation during our walk through this little town. Late afternoon we return to our hotel in Svolvær.
Dinner at a local restaurant in Svolvær in walking distance from our hotel.
Overnight: Svinøya Rorbuer
Meals: Breakfast, Dinner
Today, we will discover the islands over land. Our private shuttle takes us south and the first stop is the Lofotr Museum, a short visit to the world’s largest Viking longhouse rebuild on the spot where the remains were found. A very interesting experience. We continue over the islands to Reine a little village in an amazing scenic fjord. On the way down we stop by Ramberg beach, interesting to see a white sandy beach with turquoise waters covered in snow in wintertime (for Aussies:-).
Here we have lunch and take some time for a stroll around, taking in the views. After Reine we drive back and visit the little town of Nusfjord, a museum in itself. A picturesque place always with the seagulls’ noise. It’s quite a bit of driving today. But the variety of natural beauty we see is endless. Late February we have daylight at this place from 7.30 am to 5 pm so enough day for sightseeing and enough night for seeing the Northern Lights.
On the way back from Nusfjord we stop in Ballstad for a dinner at Lofoten Food Studio. Another example of exquise Nordic cuisine. We are allowed to enter in outdoor clothing;-).
Overnight: Svinøya Rorbuer
Meals: Breakfast, Dinner
Today, we start a bit relaxed. We pack and check out and do a midday walk on snowshoes to enjoy the snow and the views. After we have lunch in the town of Svolvær, some free time to enjoy the town of Svolvær.
Dinner tonight in the local restaurant close by the quay, where we after dinner board the cruise ship Havila (9.20 pm) for our journey to the North Cape. Here we follow the original coastal post route with modern cruise ships. With short stops in many harbours along the coast this is the same route as the postal boat from Bergen to Kirkenes sailed almost a century ago. We will be on this ship enjoying the views, northern lights along the northern coasts for 1 full day and 2 nights.
Stay on the Havila ship Polaris. Full board.
Overnight: Havila ship Polaris
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
After a comfortable night’s sleep — cruising mostly along the sheltered coastline between countless small and large islands rather than the open sea — we wake to ever-changing Arctic scenery.
Today includes a four-hour stop in Tromsø, providing ample time to explore this charming northern city, beautifully set on the island of Troms, from which the wider region takes its name. Known as the gateway to the Arctic, Tromsø offers a lively atmosphere, colourful streets, and a rich polar history.
Throughout our coastal voyage, we enjoy the comfort of a superior cabin and all meals included on board. One of the highlights of travelling with Havila is the Northern Lights alert system — if conditions are right, you can opt to receive a notification when the aurora appears, inviting you out onto the deck to witness this unforgettable natural spectacle.
Overnight: Havila ship Polaris
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
At 10.55 am, we arrive in Honngsvåg, where we board a private shuttle.
First stop is the North Cape (webcam, live so no use watching this at daytime in Australia), Europe’s mainland northernmost point accessible by car. Probably a bit cold and windy up here, so we do not stay long and drive down the Cape Peninsula to Alta and our next accommodation. A 3 hr drive. Half way this 4 hour drive from the North Cape to our hotel in Alta we stop for a simple lunch and some local culture. A tiny museum made by the native Sea Sami people. A big part of the native Sami people was not engaged in reindeer herding but lived of the sea.
Arrival and check-in at Sorrisniva Arctic Wilderness Lodge. Dinner in the lodge.
Watch out for the Northern Lights!
Overnight: Sorrisniva Arctic Wilderness Lodge
Meals: Breakfast, Dinner
Today, we head for Trasti og Trine for a taste of dog sledging. Trine being a former dogsledding champion and Hanna her daughter, run the dogsledding operation with about 60 huskies and Trasti is a widely known chef specialising in using local resources.
You will span your dogs yourself (with a little help) and mush them for a dog sleigh ride along the riverbanks. After this, we will enjoy a lunch made by Trasti and a lecture from Trine about her dog sledding adventures, around the campfire in the Gammen (local native sami building).
Early evening, we visit the icehotel, where we get a guided tour and hear about the sculptures and the (yearly) building of the icehotel. After this tour, we have dinner in the Sørrisniva restaurant with a view over the Alta river. Last time I visited this place we saw a moose crossing the river over the ice. Stay and dinner at Sørrisniva Lodge
Overnight: Sørrisniva Lodge
Meals: Breakfast, Dinner
Today we will visit the native people, the Sami, who live on the Finnmark plateau. We could opt for a touristic arrangement, but we chose to visit them where they live. In this case, Nils Peder Gaup and his family live in Kautokeino. They own a herd of reindeer (never ask how many, because that is like asking how much money you have in the bank:-) and they live the life of modern reindeer herders. A very interesting mix with modern life and herding a group of thousands of reindeer in the wilderness, moving around all year over vast stretches of land and even migrating to the coastal islands in the summer.
After this interesting meeting and cuddling the reindeer, of course, we head for the nearby Juhls Silver jewellery workshop, where we enjoy a guided tour and a drink with a snack in the cafe.
Drive back over the tundra to the Lodge Arctic farewell dinner at Trasti og Trine.
Overnight: Sørrisniva Lodge
Meals: Breakfast, Dinner
After breakfast in the lodge, check out and transfer to Alta airport for a 2-hour flight to Oslo International Airport.
We hope you enjoyed your time above the Arctic Circle. Thank you for visiting our country! – Ha det bra!
