Facts About Oman

Oman, a mesmerizing country located in the Middle East, is an off-the-beaten-path gem waiting to be explored. Situated on the southeastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula, Oman will offer a unique blend of ancient traditions and modern developments that will leave any traveler in awe.

Geographically, Oman shares borders with the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Yemen. Its coastline spans over 2,000 kilometers, offering visitors diverse landscapes, including pristine beaches, rugged mountains, and vast deserts.  One standout feature of Oman is its captivating wadis, picturesque valleys carved through the mountains, where turquoise pools and lush vegetation create a serene oasis.

The Omani people are known for their welcoming nature and genuine hospitality.  Aussies will feel right at home among the friendly locals, who are always ready with a warm smile and a helping hand.  Many Omanis still embrace their traditional way of life, which revolves around the principles of Islam.  Respect for elders, generosity towards guests, and a keen sense of community are deeply ingrained in the Omani culture.

Speaking of culture, Oman is a treasure trove of ancient traditions and customs.  The traditional dress for Omani men is the dishdasha, a flowing ankle-length robe, while Omani women gracefully don the abaya, a loose black cloak.  With its hypnotic blend of rhythms and melodies, Omani music will transport visitors to a different era.  The country’s vibrant souqs (markets) offer a glimpse into the rich artistic heritage, with traditional crafts such as silver jewelry, handwoven textiles, and intricately carved wooden artifacts.

The country is renowned for its architectural wonders, with its crowning jewel being the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque in Muscat.  Boasting stunning craftsmanship and intricate Islamic designs, this mosque is a symbol of Oman’s religious devotion and architectural mastery.  Plus, Oman is famous for the imposing forts and castles, which stand as a testament to the country’s turbulent history.

But what truly sets Oman apart is its commitment to preserving its natural surroundings.  The country is home to several protected areas, such as the Wahiba Sands and the stunning Wadi Shab.  These untouched landscapes provide opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts to go dune bashing, explore hidden cave pools, or simply immerse themselves in the tranquility of nature.

For those seeking adventure, Oman offers a range of thrilling activities.  Drive along the coastal roads for a chance to spot dolphins in the clear blue waters of the Arabian Sea.  Embark on a desert safari, experiencing the exhilaration of riding across the undulating dunes in a 4×4 vehicle.  Or, check out some options for deep-sea diving and explore vibrant coral reefs teeming with marine life.

Oman’s well-preserved culture, breathtaking landscapes, and warm-hearted people make it a must-visit destination.  Whether you are seeking a cultural immersion, an outdoor adventure, or simply a peaceful retreat, Oman has something for everyone.

Some Pre-Visit Reminders

As you decide your trip to Oman, you should be aware of the cultural beliefs and traditions that are deeply respected by the locals.  Oman is a Muslim country, so dress modestly, most especially when you are visiting religious sites.  Avoid wearing tight or revealing clothes to show respect for the local customs, so be sure to pack accordingly.  Maybe it would be wise to leave your skimpy bikini at home, or take a cover-up.

When it comes to packing for your trip to Oman, there are a few essentials you shouldn’t forget.  Firstly, make sure to pack lightweight, breathable clothes as the country experiences hot and arid weather year-round.  Sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses are a necessity.  Don’t forget to pack a scarf or shawl when it comes to visiting mosques or other religious places.  Some places will have covers you can ‘borrow’ but they are not necessarily washed between use; we recommend you take your own.

Shopping is good in Oman, especially in larger areas where there are more tourists, Muskat etc.  The local currency is the Omani rial (OMR is the code).  Some places also accept the UAE dirham or USD, but not always.  Most larger/tourist places, hotels and some restaurants accept MasterCard, Visa, Electron, Cirrus or Maestro.  ATMs can ‘dry up’ on weekends in smaller towns, so a little local currency might be wise.
